Rolling Razorbacks compete against local basketball teams

Instead of hearing that familiar squeaking of sneakers on the court; the dribble of a ball and a fast-paced wheel screech took its place on Oct. 25.

As the third annual fundraiser, The Rolling Razorbacks met basketball teams around town on the court–for a game of basketball in wheelchairs.

Each member from The Rolling Razorbacks had lost use of their lower extremities at some point, but with perseverance and a deep love for the game, all members continued playing basketball–inspiring handicapped players around the nation.

Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club and run by the Key club members of SHS, hosting of the event was a big success. It proved very inspiring for SHS players who played against the Rolling Razorbacks this year.

Team member Allie Willbourn was surprised at how hard it move in the wheelchair.

“It was very difficult ’cause you can’t control which way you’re going, and it’s really hard to turn or to stop, or to do anything, because they’re really good,” Willbourn said.

Britney Broadway said it was hard and fun at the same time.

Willbourn stated, “It was a lot of fun and really neat to see how good they are.”

Julisa Anthony said she became more aware of  how tough it must be in a wheelchair.

“It helps me see how difficult it is for people who don’t have their lower extremities to use,” Anthony said. “And it helps me see it’s not all as easy as they make it look.”

Willbourn was really inspired by the players.

“They came back from whatever accident they had, and that they didn’t give up  their love for the game,” Willbourn added. “They pursued this and they did really well.”
