Searcy (LP) The words in the English language are diminishing faster day by day. The history of the world is constantly being changed and forced into the memories of every human mind; Everyone is demanded to believe what the government creates or they will mysteriously vanish and no one is permitted to notice. If the government declares that 2+2=5, then it is a new fact and you are forced to believe it despite what you know is true; That is the new truth. Posters plastered on street corners and walls which surround the city reveal the society’s three sentence truth, “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” This is the society of the predicted year 1984.
Author George Orwell, born in 1903, predicted the life of the 1984 generation in his book 1984, and although critics believe he wasn’t spot on with every single detail, the resemblance stands uncanny to this day.
This year, the junior class members enrolled in AP English were required to read this book. “When I finished our assigned book, I was scared. It practically says that the government is always watching you,” says Noah Summerland, a junior at Searcy High School. Many students who have read this book, have reported that their eyes were opened to how shockingly similar the book is to today’s reality. They realize how involved the government is with their lives, and they were made aware they just take in what the government tells them without question. “I believe that the government in the book, ‘Big Brother,’ represents our government today. I believe our government watches us without telling us,” says Elijah Simpinderpher, a junior at Searcy High School. The students reported that their English teacher, Trisha White, made an excellent and entertaining choice. “It was my favorite book all year. I did not think I would actually enjoy an assigned reading book,” says Diamond Murray, a junior at Searcy High School. The book 1984 was a definite eye opening revelation to Searcy High School.
