Veteran’s Day Honors People that Serve the Country

Searcy (LP) Chances are you know someone or someone in your family that is a veteran. Harding celebrates this day by having Breakfast with a Veteran is this Friday from 7:30 am to 9:00 am in the Charles White Dining Hall. To celebrate the Veterans Day in Newport, Augusta, and Searcy 5th Street Church of Christ will have a Veterans Day Dinner and a special  surprise for the Veterans.

Each Year on November 11 is Veterans Day. This day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I (The Great War) between the Allied nation and Germany. The ending of World War I everything stopped at eleven o’clock.  This day also honors people who have fought in a war that America was involved in. It was first called Armistice Day ,but then Congress decided to keep this annual celebration.Then in 1938 before World War II it was changed to Veterans Day.

In 1980, of September Harold Young leave the military. “I was in military communications. We were in groups,in these groups we secured system and codes.” He served three years in service and three years after. “ Veterans Day affect me by respecting what me and others did for this country.”

Walter Reed fought in the Vietnam War. He left October 1967 and come back home on October 1968. “I lead a machine gun squad with five guys including self was six.” He was in Vietnam 9 months and 17 days and in the hospital for 3 and a half months in Japan. “ I did not get shot, but I got injured by jumping out of a helicopter. My ankles and knees were damaged.” He wore his green camouflage uniform. After he come back he went to college at Harding University. “Veterans Day affects me because it shows respect on the time I was in the Vietnam War.” After 4 years he had a daughter Juana Reed.
