Searcy(LP) According to the official FCCLA website, Students taking action with recognition, otherwise known as STAR Events, are “competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation.” STAR Events provide “individual skill development and application of learning through the following activities: cooperative – teams work to accomplish specific goals, individualized – an individual member works alone to accomplish specific goals , and competitive – individual or team performance measured by an established set of criteria.”
Last week, Searcy FCCLA had students who participated in both cooperative and individualized events.
Junior, Sara Feather, spent weeks preparing for her Star Event, Promote and Publicize FCCLA. This project was built on Feather promoting and strengthening FCCLA and FACS programs within the Searcy community and SHS. Feather believes,” I was able to reach out to my community and state because of my participation in star events.” She received a gold medal in this event.
Junior, Bailey Mills, paired up with freshman, Chloe Long to compete in the Star Event, Advocacy. According to the official FCCLA webpage, This star event “recognizes participants who demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and ability to actively identify a local, state, national, or global concern, research the topic, identify a target audience and potential partnerships, form an action plan, and advocate for the issue in an effort to positively affect a policy or law.” For their topic of concern, Mills and Long chose to discuss suicide. Mills said,” Being able to raise awareness for something so close to my heart is something I will always thank FCCLA for.” They received silver within their competition.
Brooke Fraser and I, seniors, chose to do our Star Event over planning a life event. We chose something that would normally be super stressful with the hopes of making it less difficult. We chose to debate over college housing that would better suite our needs, and then properly planned out our decision on housing. We also received a silver medal.
This years district star events competition is over, but SHS FCCLA will be sending Sara Feather, Bailey Mills and Chloe Long to compete in the State FCCLA Star Event Competition that will be held in the early months of 2017.
