Searcy (LP) The SHS women’s track team is full of tremendous athletes yet two go outside the mold and do track a little different. Anna Rachel Hite and Everett Kirkman don’t just run around in a circle they do two very rare and unique field events. Anna Rachel Hite is the only girl on the whole track team to courageously compete in the pole vault competition, the most dangerous of all the events. Hite has been pole vaulting for SHS for five years and stated βI can not imagine my life without it.β The first time she picked up a pole she knew that pole vault was the sport for her. As Hite reflects back on her previous season she is determined to excel pass last year accomplishment of receiving seventh place at the Arkansas State Track Meet. Everett Kirkman throws discus, an event usually men dominate due to the need of large muscle mass in the arms. Kirkman is also the only girl from SHS who competes in her event of discus. Kirkman has just restarted her discus career this year from her previous years in seventh and eighth grade, she stated βIt has been a while since I have done this but I feel as if I never quit.β Kirkman also has bright eyes and a hopes for an SHS Track State Championship. With these two strong girls leading the lady lions this season the future is looking bright as they head to greatness. Hite hopes to carry on her pole vault career into college preferably at Harding University. Kirkman does not see herself moving in that direction with track however she does aspire to play tennis at the University of Mississippi. Best of luck to both of these tremendous athletes. Anna Rachel Hite and Everett Kirkman stand out due to their courageous decision to choose such risky and dangerous field events to be a part of. There minority status at practice only pushes them to be at the same level as the guys they must practice with and for that it only makes them work harder and push themselves to keep up.
