Searcy, Ark., (LP) — Child poverty refers to the state of children living in poverty. This applies to children that come from poor families or orphans being raised with limited, or in some cases absent, state resources. According to the National Center for Children in poverty, around 15 million children in the United States live in families that live below the federal poverty threshold. It is important for every community to recognize this issue and help in every way they can. Head Start is a program of the United States Department of Health and Human Services that provides comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and their families. There is one located in Searcy.

“I love my job because I know I’m helping my community while doing what I love,” said Head Start Child Therapist/teacher Leslie Wells. Mrs. Wells sees first hand on what it is like to have limited or no resources. Parents have to make a certain amount in order to even qualify to register their child. They have to meet certain requirements such as one income home, unable to provide special education, or even a child who is in foster care. Mrs. Wells stated, “My job has made me a better mom, sister, and daughter.”

Alisha Webber, manager of Searcy Head Start, faces many challenges everyday but still puts a smile on her face. Mrs. Webber “treats every child like her own, with love and respect.” Alisha is really big into helping her community and her job is perfect for that. “I come in everyday knowing that I am helping my community and myself as a person.” Head Start changes many lives, including the staff members. Some days are tough, but the good days overcome those.

It is always important to remember that not everyone is as fortunate as the next person. There are numerous ways one can help children in poverty. Volunteering can be done is many ways such as tutoring underprivileged kids, holding a clothes or book drive, or even sponsor an underprivileged child. Donating food, medical care, toys, books, clothes or even water can help tremendously. Becoming a mentor to a child will help their future and yours. Many community members of Searcy foster children.

Head Start Preschools is a big step towards ending child poverty. The school not only helps the child succeed, but also the parents. It’s always important to be thankful for something, even the little things. Someone always has it worse and it’s the worlds job to end it.
