EAST projects helping SHS freshmen

SEARCY, AR (LP) –  SHS high school has a program named EAST which stands for Education Advanced by Service and Technology. The EAST program has been at SHS for 4 strong years now. EAST is a class that helps students design projects for their school and community and to learn unique things about different equipment . EAST student Demaceo Whittier one of two students is creating a virtual reality glasses that show freshmen a way to tour the high school before actually entering the building. Demaceo stated, “ Me and another student in EAST thought about this project a lot and when we got this idea it was incomplete from a few years ago, We decided to take it and finish it to help 8th graders.”

The EAST project for students to use virtual reality glasses was a unfinished project that never got started. For this project to get a start going Demaceo has to capture pictures from every angle of a room and hall of the school, and put it into the glasses. SHS students could benefit from this project in many different ways. One the students in EAST are working every day and learning new techniques with equipment. They are having to research, take and edit the pictures, and somehow compile everything into the virtual reality glasses. Demaceo Whittier stated, “ I think this could be a great project because it would show freshmen where everything is so they won’t look lost and panic.” The reason behind this project is to not waste time at registration and actually be able to take time to explore.

SHS mapping of the high school.

The virtual reality glasses will show students how and where to go to get to their destinations. It is also a fun way to learn the mapping of the school. Freshmen Colton Brazeal stated, “ I believe it would be a great idea to have a virtual reality glasses tour! It would help us so we don’t have to keep asking teachers and upperclassmen for help. It would also save time to learn through the tour than, wondering where to go for the first week of school.” This EAST project has a lot of work left to get all the pictures and noises put together for the up coming freshmen.

Kennedy Cook another freshman stated, “ I believe this project is a great idea and it will benefit 8th graders and the students in the EAST program because, the students have a lot of time to get this project together and they are learning as they go which is a cool idea.” Being lost as a freshman is not a fun feeling so a project like this could be a good impact on the school and help solve a problem.
